Organizations continually seek ways to reduce costs, improve productivity, and customer satisfaction while attaining competitive advantage. As a result, organizations rely on supply chains and logistics to coordinate improvements and productivity across marketing, production, and finance departments within an organization and across organizations to meet goals and objectives. This paper uses three articles as a basis of how logistics and supply chain management processes meet customer requirements. Logistics will also be defined along with a discussion of the of supply chain logistics in organizational strategy. Implications of poor logistics and supply chain management are reviewed and the identification and description of customer satisfaction requirements influencing logistics and impacting the supply chain are examined. Finally examples of inappropriate and appropriate logistics planning that leads to customer dissatisfaction or satisfaction are illustrated.

Inappropriate Logistics Planning Resulting in Customer Dissatisfaction

Organizations often make decisions based on trade offs. Many decisions are based on financial analysis. General Motors (GM) has decided to use cross docking as a method of moving replacement parts from warehouses out of local servicing regions to local facing dealership parts warehouses on referral orders. Cross docking fails to meet the expectations and needs of transporting critically needed dealership parts for installation on customer’s vehicles.

When parts needed to repair a customer’s vehicle are unavailable at our dealership’s facing warehouse in Charlotte, NC, they are referred to alternate warehouses until one is identified with available stock. However, instead of direct shipping the part via UPS or FedEx, the critical part is shipped via dedicated GM truck from the shipping facility to a cross dock location then routed to Charlotte, NC to my dealership for installation on the vehicle often creating a two to three day delay resulting in an unsatisfied customer.
