The Difficulty of Adaptation: Length and Structure

Perhaps the most obvious difficulty during the process of adaptation concerns the novel’s length. Stories of many hundred pages will have to be shortened to fit into two or three hours (cf. Beja 59), and even a “six-hour television miniseries must abbreviate long patches of dialogue or the reading of letters” (Troost 6). Although condensing may include leaving out subplots and several themes of the novel (cf. Seger 2), the “integrity of the original work” should be preserved (Beja 82). In order to create a commercial adaptation, it is vital to give the story a clear structure which can be followed easily, since the viewer is not able to “turn back the page, recheck a name, reread the description” (Seger 7). Generally, a “good film story has direction [...] [and] dimensionality” (Seger 77), which means that it moves toward a climax while revealing themes and characters at the same time. Therefore, events sometimes have to be reordered or added (cf. Seger 100), so that films rarely begin and end at the same point where the novel does (cf. Seger 2). Still, how to best perform these inevitable changes in plot and, thus, in length without losing unity of story, is a problem with which every adaptor is confronted anew.
