This paper provides an overview of crucial features of a short story and explores the importance of variations on figurative language in short stories. The ethnic short story "The Rudy Elmenhurst Story" by Julia Alvarez is used as an example to show the usage and significance. Due to various interpretations, I wrote a summary of the short story and handed it to some family members and friends to collect different ideas. The summary and the readers’ reactions can also be found in this paper.

Excerpt from the Book

4.2 Pencil

In the presentation I asked the students from the course whether they thought that there was a deeper meaning or connotation to the pencil at all. It seemed to me they had not considered the pencil to be a symbol. Nevertheless, after giving them a little hint they brought up some good ideas. Yolanda tells the reader about the tradition in her family that no one likes to throw things away. She tries to keep things as long as possible. My first thought was simply the anxiety of loss in general. This could relate to many things, such as her origins, traditions and beliefs.

After having read the complete story, the basic anxiety of loss converted into an entirely new dimension. It seems to me that Yolanda is afraid of losing her virginity, which obviously relates to her deepest and most important beliefs. Something valued so exceedingly cannot just be thrown away. There has to be a certain point, achievement or satisfaction. If that point, achievement or satisfaction has been reached, any of these factors can then lead to the decision of leaving the ‘pencil’ behind. This idea agrees with one that came from one of ‘my’ readers, namely the image of the hourglass. Time is going by and by the time the pencil is completely sharpened down Yolanda will have to make a decision.
