Objectives and Topics

The primary objective of this work is to critically examine the implementation of Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (ICLT) in modern foreign language classrooms, specifically addressing the gap between theoretical popularity and practical classroom application.

  • Comparison of traditional textbook-based instruction versus communicative approaches.
  • The role of meaningful context and authentic materials in language acquisition.
  • Overcoming student anxiety regarding mistakes and accuracy versus fluency.
  • Personal reflections on language learning experiences during student exchanges.
  • The responsibility of teachers in motivating students and fostering communicative competence.

Excerpt from the Book

1. Essay

If a student utters “I am going to church on Sunday” one would argue that he is able to produce correct English sentences. But what would one say if this was the answer to the question “What is your favorite fruit?”. The sentence still is grammatically correct but it does not prove good knowledge of English. It only shows that this student was able to memorize an English sentence but he was not capable of uttering it in the right context.

This is what happens when foreign languages are taught without meanings or contexts as it often happens in foreign language teaching, even though an approach exists since the 1970’s that shows a way out of situations like these. It is called Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (ICLT) and is becoming more and more popular and important. As Hedge shortly puts it “Communicative language teaching sets out to involve learners in purposeful tasks which are embedded in meaningful contexts and which reflect and rehearse language as it is used authentically in the world outside the classroom”. It is about teaching foreign languages in a meaningful way and getting students to participate actively in class. There is a variety of ways of using this approach which certainly is one of the reasons for its popularity in theory. But what about putting it into to practice and implementing it at school?
