Introduction: This introductory chapter establishes the context for exploring the digital participation of Indian Muslims. It highlights the growing presence of a digitally engaged Muslim middle class in India, both urban and rural. The chapter argues that this significant demographic has been inadequately studied in past research and media, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive analysis of their experiences. It introduces the core argument that the increased engagement is due to factors like improved education levels, wider access to technology, and the necessity for virtual interaction, particularly amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The chapter also previews the research questions that will guide the investigation.
Area of Research: This section traces the technological engagement of Indian Muslims historically, contrasting their past relative lack of involvement with the current surge in digital usage. It highlights the disparity between the significant advancements in technology during the Islamic Golden Age and the later lack of participation by Indian Muslims. It then shifts to the present, focusing on the factors driving increased digital engagement, including the proliferation of affordable smartphones and increased internet access due to initiatives like Digital India and Jio's expansion. This chapter frames the current increased usage as a significant shift, warranting detailed study.
Objective: This chapter clearly articulates the research objectives. The main goal is to address the lack of scholarly attention on the digital participation of Indian Muslims. Three research questions are posed to guide the study: How do digital platforms advantage Indian Muslims? How do digital platforms challenge Indian Muslims? How might the future of Indian Muslims look within the dynamic digital India? This chapter lays the foundation for the subsequent analysis by explicitly stating the core questions that will be examined throughout the paper.
Methodology: This chapter details the research methodology employed in the study, identifying it as a qualitative approach within the field of Minority Studies. The study utilizes a secondary data analysis approach, drawing on reliable internet sources such as peer-reviewed journals, books, and reputable media outlets. The chapter emphasizes the identification of a significant research gap concerning the experiences of Indian Muslims with digital technologies and highlights the qualitative nature of the study design. It indicates a cohort study, analytical, and cross-sectional approach.
Results and Discussion: This chapter presents the findings of the research, structured around the three research questions. It provides evidence regarding both the advantages and challenges faced by Indian Muslims in the digital sphere. The advantages include access to religious resources, educational tools, economic opportunities, and platforms for social and political engagement.
