Aren’t females themselves the archetypical victim in true-crime stories? So why would they enjoy listening, watching or reading about the horrible things rapists and serial killers do to their targets? With this paper, I seek to shed light into that paradox. I want to explain why true-crime media is specifically popular amongst women. So firstly, I will give a quick introduction into the rising popularity of true-crime media. Secondly, I will explore as well as explain the gender gap in true-crime consumption with the aid of various social psychological, sociological and criminological research and present a profile of the typical female true-crime fan. I will finish off with a summary.

Research Objectives and Core Themes
This paper examines the paradox of why women, who are statistically more likely to be victims of violent crime, represent the majority of the audience for true-crime media. The research aims to synthesize social psychological, sociological, and criminological perspectives to explain this interest, profiling the typical female fan and identifying underlying motivations such as self-defense, emotional catharsis, and the processing of trauma.
- The historical development and popularization of the true-crime genre.
- Statistical analysis of the gender gap in true-crime consumption.
- Demographic profiling of the modern female true-crime enthusiast.
- Psychological and feminist theories regarding motivations for consuming violent content.
- The function of true-crime as a form of self-help and empowerment media.

3.3 What Draws Women Towards True-Crime
When Hannah Gray asks about why females choose to consume true-crime content, she receives the following answers:
“Curiosity was the most popular response, followed by empathy to the victim, a desire to see justice served in a case, emotional catharsis, and to feel a sense of control, in that order. Individuals that chose to type their reasons included: forensic knowledge, interest in learning about the psychology of killers, survival tips/warning signs, narrative structure/genre interest, a fear of the unknown, and a background of working in the justice system.” (Gray, 2019, p. 7)
The results seem plausible in a way, but also raise questions in another. For example, suspecting curiosity as a natural urge in human behavior is fairly reasonable, as well as wanting to see criminals put behind bars and seeking a sense of control over the dark side of human life. On the other hand, the need to empathize with mostly female victims and experiencing intense emotions triggered by (sexual) violence and brutality, seems counter-intuitive. It is also hard to understand why women look for survival tips in stories that can cause their fear of becoming a victim in the first place. Besides those few ambiguities, the online survey does give a good impression on what women think attracts them towards true-crime. In the next section, I want to present research that explains their fascination from an objective standpoint.
