Summary Excerpt Details

This study delves into the impact of the New Testament on the evolution of Christian worship practices, with a focus on the transition from Sabbath observance to Sunday services. Drawing from biblical references such as Revelation 1:10 and John 7:23, the shift to Sunday worship is explored amidst debates surrounding adherence to Mosaic law. Additionally, the limited mentions of the day of worship in Pauline writings, specifically in Galatians 4:10 and Colossians 2:16, are examined in the context of developing doctrinal practices. Through this analysis, the study sheds light on the New Testament's role in shaping worship traditions within Christianity.

Research Objectives and Themes

This study examines the evolution of early Christian worship practices as depicted in the New Testament, analyzing how these ceremonies were influenced by historical, cultural, and spiritual shifts in the apostolic age.

  • The transition from Old Testament Sabbath traditions to Sunday worship.
  • The linguistic and functional significance of prayer, singing, and ritual acts.
  • The symbolism of baptism and foot washing as mechanisms for spiritual integration.
  • The interpretation of worship as an act of devotion rather than location-bound practice.

Excerpt from the Book

The ritual kiss

The ritual kiss was also a form of worship. Kissing is at the linguistic base of the act of worship. The Greek verb for worship (κυνέω/kuneō) is rooted in the action of kissing. In the New Testament, people "worship" Christ by bringing him presents, falling at his feet, clutching them, and even kissing them. Paul's letters express concern about keeping worship and the ritual kiss pure or "holy" (Romans 6:16; 1 Corinthians 16:20; 2 Corinthians 13:12; 1 Thessalonians 5:26). This stress on holiness and decorum was probably crucial. According to Larry W. Hurtado (2000), even some of the most conservative historians believe that the New Testament ritual kiss was delivered and received on the lips. The ritual kiss was intended to calm tensions and promote unity and forgiveness among the community (as were other rites). It should be noted that Christians considered themselves spiritual family members and that such kisses were frequent in Greco-Roman society, according to Romans 16:13–16 and Ephesians 3:15 (Hurtado, 2000:43). This practice is now only practiced by a section of the Christian faithful in modern times.
