Excerpt from the Book

3.1. Indexicality

The indexical function has the task of informing the readers and must be relevant and appropriate to the context and environment in which it occurs. However, according to Scollon and Wong Scollon (2003: 205), another factor that affects whether a sign is indexical or not is its connection with surrounding signs. and they refer to this situation with the term double indexicality. In their book, Discourses in Place (2003), they, therefore, emphasize that in order to investigate the indexicality of a sign, the following questions must be asked;

(1) Who has “uttered” this?

(2) Who is the viewer?

(3) What is the social situation?

(4) Is that part of the material world relevant to such as a sign?

(Scollon and Wong Scollon, 2003: 3)
