The purpose of this systematic review is to assess how well diet and exercise work in the UK for those who have impaired glucose tolerance in order to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The data was collected using a number of search engines, including Ovid, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Scopus. Research was done using PRISMA criteria. A total of 1200 studies were extracted based on the titles and articles. Upon deeper inspection, only nine, nevertheless, match the necessary data on the acceptability, efficacy, and effectiveness of diet and exercise intervention therapy in IGT patients.
The main finding that unites all studies is how successful lifestyle changes are at postponing or averting the onset of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). Every study shows how crucial it is to alter one's lifestyle, whether it be through dietary changes, regular exercise, or culturally relevant therapies, in order to reduce the risk of diabetes.
The results of multiple studies have come together to show how effective lifestyle changes are in preventing and treating Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). The consistently beneficial effects on glucose tolerance, which also highlight the therapies' potential to postpone the onset of type 2 diabetes due to impaired glucose tolerance, attest to their efficacy.

Zielsetzung und Themenschwerpunkte (Objectives and Key Themes)
This systematic review examines the efficacy of diet and exercise in preventing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in the United Kingdom (UK). The study aims to assess the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions, focusing on dietary changes and physical activity, in postponing or preventing the onset of T2DM. It also investigates the critical components of an effective national diabetes prevention program and explores the challenges and benefits of identifying high-risk individuals through various techniques.
- Effectiveness of diet and exercise in preventing T2DM in individuals with IGT
- Role of lifestyle interventions in postponing or preventing T2DM onset
- Critical components of an effective national diabetes prevention program
- Challenges and benefits of identifying high-risk individuals for diabetes prevention
- Real-world impact of diabetes preventive interventions
Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
The first chapter provides an introduction to the global health concern of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its increasing prevalence in the UK. It highlights the importance of preventing T2DM, especially in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and explores various dietary strategies, exercise interventions, and lifestyle management components. The chapter also discusses the research gap and the need for a comprehensive study on the effectiveness of diet and exercise in preventing T2DM among individuals with IGT in the UK.
Chapter 2 outlines the methodology used in the systematic review. It details the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, study focus, participants, types of interventions, data collection process, and quality appraisal methods. The chapter provides a clear framework for the review, ensuring rigorous and systematic analysis of relevant research.
Chapter 3 presents the results of the systematic review, focusing on the effectiveness of diet interventions and engagement in exercise in preventing T2DM among individuals with IGT. The chapter summarizes the findings from the nine studies included in the review, providing insights into the benefits and potential limitations of various interventions.
Chapter 4 delves into the discussion of the findings, analyzing the effectiveness of diabetes preventive initiatives and exploring the critical components and strategies for designing an effective national diabetes prevention program. The chapter also compares different identification techniques for high-risk individuals, assesses the real-world impact of diabetes preventive interventions, and provides an overview of diabetes prevention programs across various settings and research trials.
