Long-term unemployment puts people impacted and their families under a lot of mental and financial strain. This is also a source of concern for policymakers because high rates of long-term unemployment suggest inefficient labor markets. Since the global financial crisis of 2008, the South African labor market has been characterized by slow job growth for young individuals relative to older workers.

Unemployment is a major problem in South Africa and Covid-19 played huge role in decreasing the existing jobs and more people lost their jobs in 2020. And more jobs were lost in the second quarter of 2021 due to looting in some parts of the country.

Factors impacting unemployment rate in South Africa

Poor education and training: Jobs are being lost due to a lack of knowledge and productivity. Unemployment rises in lockstep with lower educational levels, and the educational system is failing to produce the necessary skills for the labor market (Stats SA, 2008).

Labour demand - supply mismatch: The growth in the number of job searchers throughout time has had an impact on labor supply. Women's labor market involvement has risen considerably in recent years, especially among African women. Furthermore, the South African population is a young population, with more people reaching working age than there are jobs available in the labor market (Stats SA, 2008).

The effects of the 2008/2009 global recession: Many workers lost their employment during the recession, with manufacturing having the highest amount of layoffs. As a result, businesses were unable to afford to hire more employees and were forced to downsize their staff, contributing to the country's high unemployment rate (Stats SA, 2008).
