The witches of Francisco de Goya

Like I mentioned before the series of six witch paintings was commissioned by the Duchess of Osuna. The paintings were meant for her boudoir in her estate in La Alameda. She was an emancipated woman, surrounding herself with intellectuals. The Duchess was against Spanish norms, which denied women education. It is said that she enjoyed the company of other men, besides her husband. The role of a woman was very limited at this time, they were wife and mother, nothing more. Duchess of Osuna was one of the women who broke with those traditions. But not just her, many noblewomen rejected formalities of society. They started being able to acknowledge their own desires and follow them. Goya criticizes the imposition of marriage, not only in his witches’ paintings but also in Los Caprichos. In a way his depiction of witches was close to the Duchess of Osuna’s own perception of women. (Fernández-Salvador, p. 25-26)
