The main question this paper will be focusing on is what the socially critical aspects behind the concept album "Demon Days" by Gorillaz are and how the creators used animated virtual characters to convey their message.

The creators of the band Gorillaz implemented a new way of discussing serious topics by introducing four entirely virtual band members and creating a made-up world around them to move and perform in. Their goal was to produce a parody of the major label music industry and regain their authenticity and creative authority.

The themes and social critiques discussed in the album were analyzed by using its most popular song and music video "Feel Good Inc." and picking apart its different elements and putting them into context. The research in this paper shows that the main social critiques of the album were aimed at the music industry and mass consumption. The theme is set in a post-apocalyptical world, demonstrating the lasting effects of industrialization and capitalism.

Excerpt from the book

3.1 The socially critical aspects of the virtual characters

As previously mentioned in the second chapter, the founders of Gorillaz had the intention of creating a band that parodies the popular music industry. They used their knowledge of the industry to implement four characters that cater to different stereotypes related to race and gender, which serves as a complex social critique in itself. The careful construction and craftsmanship of the band members caused them to be accepted as real entities and be looked at as talented musicians and performers (see Stark, 2018: 184-185).

In Stark’s paper on gender, ethnicity, and identity in virtual bands, she argues that the gender and ethnic traits being shown in Gorillaz could be a direct reflection of how Albarn and Hewlett interpret gender and ethnicity in the music industry in general. They heavily relied on already existing figures in the industry, which played into the acceptance of the virtual characters as real-life rock stars (see Stark, 2018: 186).

The band is made up of three male characters with the guitarist Noodle being the only female band member. The male characters rely on a variety of masculine qualities that are common in rock and roll and hip-hop (see Stark, 2018: 191). The concept of ethnicity in the band is introduced with the drummer being portrayed as an African American, giving insight into ethnic stereotyping of ‘black musical identity’ (see Stark, 2018: 200). The only female character is also raising questions about gender stereotypes and ethnic traits due to her Japanese origin (see Stark, 2018: 227).

All of the previously mentioned traits and stereotypes can be analyzed through the backstory of each individual character.
