The purpose of this research is to explore and analyse Samuel Beckett's ludicrous drama, Endgame, in the context of Pragmatics in general and violations of Conversational Principles in particular, as well as in the context of Pragmatics. Using Grice's idea of Conversational Principles, the study seeks to evaluate the selected conversational interactions in a formalised manner. Conversational theatre is characterised by the skillful use of language as a potent tool for communication; nevertheless, in Beckett's play, characters are concerned with various elements of language and its usage. The dialogues utilised in an absurd play are nonsensical exchanges in which there is no sense of cohesion between the characters. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for the study of many elements of language. It appears silly, yet it serves as a means of communication between the characters. The characters in this story frequently utilise broken words, make nonsensical comments, repeat themselves, and hesitate for no apparent reason, which is typical of the genre. His adept use of informal language and fragmented sentences exemplifies how language should be used in a natural setting.

Zielsetzung und Themenschwerpunkte (Objectives and Key Themes)
This research aims to analyze Samuel Beckett's play, "Endgame," through the lens of pragmatics, specifically examining violations of conversational principles. Using Grice's concept of Conversational Principles, the study investigates selected conversational interactions within the play.
- The role of language and its use in conversational theatre
- Analysis of the play's nonsensical dialogue and its contribution to communication
- Exploration of conversational principles and their violation in Beckett's play
- Interpretation of meaning in the play's seemingly nonsensical dialogue through the application of Conversational Principles
- Examination of the absurdity in Beckett's "Endgame" and its impact on the audience's understanding of the play
Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
Chapter One introduces the relationship between literature and pragmatics, laying the groundwork for the study. This chapter outlines the study's objectives, hypothesis, value, scope, methodology, and conclusions.
Chapter Two delves into the theoretical framework, focusing on pragmatics, conversational principles, and their implications for understanding communication. Key concepts such as sentence and utterance, the emergence of conversational rules, differences between semantics and pragmatics, presupposition, implicature, deixis, speech acts theory, felicity conditions, and the politeness and cooperative principles are discussed.
Chapter Three examines the violation of the maxims of quantity and quality, analyzing dialogues from Beckett's "Endgame" to illustrate how these maxims are deliberately broken in the play.
Chapter Four explores the violation of the maxims of relation and manner, providing further analysis of selected dialogues from Beckett's "Endgame" to demonstrate the impact of these violations on the play's overall meaning.
