Summary Excerpt Details

In this term paper, I will deal with the cultural differences between Germany and France. As an Erasmus student from Germany, this topic is of particular interest to me and has already accompanied me intensively before my stay in Paris as a preparation for the semester abroad. In the last section, I will share my own opinion and thoughts on this topic.
To structure my text in a meaningful way, I will refer to some cultural dimensions outlined by Edward T. Hall, Geert Hofstede as well as Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner and apply them to France and Germany.

Excerpt from the Book

Hofstede's cultural dimensions

Hofstede's cultural dimensions deal with power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, masculinity/femininity, and time orientation. Power distance refers to the extent to which an unequal distribution of power is tolerated by people. In a culture with high power distance, inequality and power differences are accepted. An unequal distribution is even seen as beneficial. Uncertainty avoidance deals with ambiguity and uncertainty. High uncertainty avoidance indicates that people have a low tolerance for uncertainty and prefer to be in control of the future. Individualism means that greater importance is attached to the achievement of personal goals. Collectivism, on the other hand, means that greater emphasis is placed on the well-being of the group. Furthermore, masculinity is associated with characteristics such as distinct gender roles, assertiveness, and a focus on material goods and wealth building. Femininity is associated with attributes such as fluid gender roles, modesty and being caring. Finally, the dimension of long-term versus short-term orientation deals with the extent to which people focus on the present or the future. Long-term orientation shows that the focus is on the future and emphasises endurance, perseverance, and long-term growth.
