Excerpt from the book
3.3.1 Management by Objectives
In management by objectives, important goals are agreed between employees and management in a multi-stage goal-setting process. These objectives must be met by the employees within a certain period of time. After the implementation of the target agreement, the responsible personnel are measured on the basis of the completeness of the goal fulfillment and also remunerated accordingly. Thus, this management method forms a close relation to the performance- or success-oriented remuneration differentiation.
The employee, who ensures consistent quality, enjoys full freedom of action in order to achieve the goals. As a result, he acts goal-oriented, whereby his motivation and willingness to perform increases due to the freedom of design of the goal orientation.
When applying this guidance method, it is fundamental that all objectives are formulated operationally, i.e. specifically, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-related. It is also important that all objectives are conflict-free. Since operational objectives are the result of a multi-personal negotiation process, this type of targeting is not always possible. That's why management by objectives is critical to the skills that the manager has to avoid conflicting goals and to be able to use them positively.
