In times of the decline of the family as a social parameter we witness an unquestionable popularity of the family novel in American literature. Are authors writing desperately against the unraveling nuclear family, against patchwork constellations and second and third marriages? Is this merely nostalgic reminiscence, a longing for the long lost? In my paper I will argue that the portrayal of the family in Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections and Cynthia Shearer’s The Wonder Book of the Air is a rigid dissection of the pathological cycle of dysfunction, family often produces. It leaves every generation with the burden of the latter’s failures and a lifelong struggle against reproducing revictimization

Research Objectives and Core Themes

This paper investigates the depiction of dysfunctional family structures and the phenomenon of multigenerational transmission in Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections and Cynthia Shearer’s The Wonder Book of the Air. The central research objective is to analyze how unhealthy behavioral patterns are involuntarily passed down through generations and whether these cycles of revictimization can be overcome.

  • The idealized American family vs. experienced reality
  • Multigenerational transmission of dysfunction and anxiety
  • The influence of Schopenhauer’s philosophy on family dynamics
  • Symbolism of family legacy, flight, and recurring motifs
  • The search for hope within disintegrated familial relationships

Excerpt from the Book

3.3. Genealogy and Revictimization

The quotation Shearer uses to set the mood for her novel impressively condenses the sense of family expressed in The Wonder Book of the Air. “Orphans that we are, we make our sibling kin out of anything we find…We are fragments of an unutterable whole.” It both expresses the inefficiency of family that can leave one orphaned, and the need for a family that is so urgent that one is willing to make anyone his or her family. Family is unavoidable and a part of human nature. How to survive or how to make the best of it, everyone has to figure that out him- or herself.

In The Wonder Book of the Air several recurring quotes symbolize the family legacy of values, opinions, and beliefs that finds its way in every new generation. All these quotes are by Uncle Artie and passed on by Harrison. The very first sentence of the novel “I began the serious lifelong study of the lady female member of the species homo sapiens human being in 1931” (Ibid. 3) is one of Uncle Artie’s expression and by far Harrison’s favorite quote. It introduces three themes at once: firstly the gravity and influence of the handed-down legacy for the following generation, secondly the importance of the relationship between men and women in the narrative, and thirdly it mentions a “lifelong study”, a quest that never ends, a study that doesn’t come to a final conclusion.
