The international aesthetic movement at the turn of the century is the so-called “Modern Break” or the period of literary modernism. A famous author of this movement can be found in Elias Canetti who “depicts himself as a lone traveler” (Murphy 21) and who was geographically displaced from his home in Austria while spending a significant part of his life either living or travelling through Western Europe.

His first novel is "Auto Da Fé", which was published in 1936. "Auto Da Fé" contains a number of dreams which the Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud interpreted and analyzed in his "Interpretation of Dreams" in 1899. Consequently, this essay will demonstrate in how far Freud’s concept of psychoanalysis can be defined and which features are commonly associated with it according to Canetti and Freud.

To prove this statement, the following essay initially gives a short overview of the Freudian concept of psychoanalysis and identifies its common features. Moreover, the second part of the essay will analyze and interpret Peter Kien’s dreams in Elias Canetti’s "Auto Da Fé" with regard to psychoanalysis. The third and last part will finally sum up all the important points mentioned in this paper.

Excerpt from the Book

Interpretation of Peter Kien’s Dreams

In the following I would like to discuss one of the disturbing dreams Kien has to face at night in order to illustrate in how far dreams are significant for the understanding of the complex structure of the protagonist’s character. Such a dream can already be found in the first part of the book as Kien dreams of a man and two jaguars fighting (Canetti, Auto Da Fé, 39). When the jaguars finally defeat the man by driving a heavy stone wedge into the victim’s heart, the latter’s breast is torn apart and besides a flood of blood which sets the ground on fire, several books drop out of the man’s breast, burn in the fire and Kien is not able to save them (Canetti 39).

According to the Interpretation of Dreams by Freud, the latent thought of a dream is transformed into a manifest one by postponement (Freud 138), compression, distortion (Freud 179) and symbolization (Freud 29) as we “dream most frequently of those things toward which our warmest passions are directed” (Freud 5). Concerning Kien and his dream, Canetti stated in his later work The Conscience of Words that the protagonist’s biggest passion are his books and that the only thing that was already clear at the beginning of the writing process was the fact that the protagonist consisted of books and that he and his books would burn in a fire in his library (Canetti, Das Gewissen der Worte, 235). Interestingly enough, Kien only starts having dreams of burning books when he sees his library threatened.

Summary of Chapters

3. Elias Canetti’s Auto Da Fé: An overview of the novel’s narrative structure and the protagonist Peter Kien’s psychological development as he becomes increasingly isolated from society.

4. Interpretation of Peter Kien’s Dreams: A deep dive into specific dream sequences of Kien, analyzing how symbols and wish-fulfillment relate to his obsession with his library and his mental decline.
